No matter what type of hair you have, to look perfect you need the right hair styling products. You are spoiled for choice and sometimes you don't even know what exactly the product is to be used for ...
Men's hair products have come a long way and now there is something for every hair type: thick, thin, curly, wavy etc ... We want to make this choice a little easier for you with this guide.
In this blog we present different products, what exactly they do and how they should be used.
WHICH TYPES OF HAIR STYLING PRODUCTS IS THERE?
The ever popular hairspray!
OK, maybe hairspray is still primarily marketed to women, but it's a versatile product that works great on a variety of hairstyles for men too.
One of the cool things about hairspray is that it can be used alone or in conjunction with other hair styling products like paste or pomade. And it is certainly one of the best finishing products because it offers great hold! But that is not all:
- Hairspray gives your hair volume
- You can apply hairspray to the outer layer of your hair to set your hairstyle, or spray it near the roots of your hair to lift your hair overall.
- Hairspray saves your hairstyle when the humidity is high, it doesn't make the hair limp!
Hairspray there are three different ones Finishes:
Flexible hold sprays are great for longer hairstyles that need to retain the hair's natural bounce without it becoming frizzy.
This hairspray is good for hairstyles that need volume but not too much stiffness. Medium hold has a slightly stronger hold than flexible hold, so it should be used sparingly so that the hair can still move naturally.
STRONG and ULTRA STRONG HOLD
If you want your hair to stay in place throughout the day, a strong or ultra-hold hold hairspray is recommended. This gives definition and texture for up to 12 hours or until you combed / brush it out.
SHINE: Hairsprays are offered with a low to high shine, this can be decided at will.
The word “hair wax” is sometimes confusing because it is often used for clay, paste, styling cream, and so on. We'll explain each of these products later in this post, but it's good to know that hair wax is in its own separate category.
Hair experts agree that wax is best for men with straight, short to medium-length hair, as it can cause clumping in wavy or curly locks. Hair wax gives medium hold.
Wax can be used for a variety of hairstyles, especially those that require a comb (side parting, pompadour, etc ...) Wax is more pliable than gel and can be styled at will during the day.
Carnauba wax, lanolin and beeswax are often ingredients of hair wax.
The most popular, if not the most common, product for styling men's hair is hair gel. Most of us have tried to achieve a certain look with gel, especially as teenagers. Gel is usually quite cheap and allows experimentation.
It can be applied to damp hair and it has a high hold and high shine.
Hair gel can be used for a variety of hair lengths, thicknesses, and textures.
Now comes a BUT:
Most hair gels contain alcohols that make it easier to distribute the product in the hair and allow the gel to dry faster, but alcohol is not always good for the hair: it can remove moisture from the hair and scalp and reduce the scalp's production of sebum. The result is dry, brittle hair that is prone to breakage. Dandruff and an itchy scalp can occur. Therefore you should always pay attention to the ingredients.
In recent years, hair “CLAY” has become quite popular. As the name suggests, it is made from clay and has a firm hold.
As a styling product, clay has a number of advantages:
- It gives the hair thickness and body and makes it look fuller.
- The clay is easily absorbed into the hair
- Natural clay removes dirt and impurities without drying out the hair's natural oils
- it helps to tame and care for frizzy hair, which is a great advantage for men with long or curly hair
- He repairs damaged hair
The multitude of natural ingredients give your hair a matt to slightly shiny finish. Bentonite is a clay often used in styling products that is obtained from the weathering of volcanic ash.
You don't need much either: just rub a pea-sized amount between the palms of your hands and apply it to slightly damp or dry hair.
Paste is a versatile all-round styling product and is suitable for almost any hairstyle. It only takes a small amount of it to get the style and hold you want.
Pastes fall under the medium hold category - medium gloss and have a consistency that is typically thicker than pomade. Most products are water-based, which makes it easy to wash off, and they don't clump together. If the paste is a little thicker than others, it can be rubbed between the palms of the hands to make it softer.
It gives your hair separation and flexibility, but also gives volume and texture when applied before blow-drying.
For the “bed hair” look that looks like you've just got out of bed, paste is the best choice.
If you apply the paste to damp hair, you get a medium shine. It's a versatile product that works for all hair lengths and types.
Here are a few tips for using paste:
- When the paste is applied to damp hair, a natural finish is obtained.
- Start by applying the paste to the back of your hair first and then you work your way forward.
- Apply the paste evenly all over your hair so that it has the same texture and consistency everywhere.
- The more paste is used, the stronger the hold will be.
- Pastes are also suitable for beards.
So what is that?
This product is not yet too well known, but it is a great styling product for two reasons:
1. It adds volume and grip to your hair
2. there is a light hold
The ingredients of the texture powder adhere to the hair fibers. This in turn creates volume by creating friction between the fibers. Texture powder will also absorb excess oil.
There are a few other things you should know about texture powder:
- The hair does not become soft as with other styling products, but rather provides a slightly stiff feeling and a light hold.
- Texture powder works best as a pre-style product. Apply your textured powder IN FRONT another styling product.
- You get most of the volume when the texture powder is applied to the hairline.
- You only need a small amount, otherwise the hair will become stiff.
Texture powder is also available as a spray such as the Dark Matter Spray in the beneva range!
Hair putty or hair mud are the same, different brands call it that ... It is often confused with paste because of its similar consistency. However, putty is softer with a similar hold. It allows some movement of the hair and you can re-style it if you want.
Putty is perfect for a casual look, such as B. “Messy” styles. The more putty you add, the more you can create a messy, tousled look.
It can be used for a variety of hair lengths and types, e.g. wavy, curly, etc. Put a small amount on your fingertips and work it in. It can be applied on damp or dry hair.
We hope this guide has helped you a bit to keep track of hair styling products!
