Men's skin has special requirements and it is important to choose the right care products and to make the right lifestyle decisions.
From battling acne decades after puberty to the first signs of wrinkles, winning the game of good skin can be tough. But before you curse your genes, ask yourself if your skincare routine and lifestyle are up to par. And by that we don't mean that you should stand in front of the mirror for hours or steal your girlfriend's expensive facial care products.
There's no need for five-step peels or expensive serums, that's what many dermatologists say. Sometimes less is even more! Applying too many products can even irritate the skin. The most important thing is to thoroughly cleanse and moisturize the skin every day, as well as following some other basic rules of care. Here are the do's and don'ts for fresher, younger-looking men's skin:
A splash of cold water doesn't just wake you up: a good cleansing will help remove dead skin cells that make your face look dull. Use a cleansing gel both in the morning and before bed. For a more thorough cleansing that also stimulates the growth of new skin cells, you should use an exfoliant once or twice a week. But don't overdo it, if the skin appears red and irritated then you can skip a week.
DON'T: FORGET MOISTURIZING CREAM
A moisturizer should automatically be the second step after cleansing. Apply the moisturizer when the skin is still slightly damp to lock in the moisture. Most face lotions are oil-based, which works well for men with normal skin - and they're a must have for dry or flaky skin, especially in winter. If you have oily skin or are prone to peeing and blackheads, then you should opt for a water-based product.
DO: DRINK WATER
Unfortunately, lotions and moisturizers are usually not enough - the skin also needs moisture from within. Specialists recommend drinking six to eight glasses of water a day. Notice how much alcohol and caffeine you are consuming. Both of these can lead to dehydration. It is very important to balance this with water (preferably still water) and to supply the body with sufficient amounts.
DO: EARLY ANNOUNCEMENT ON THE WRINKLES
The skin begins to produce less collagen in the mid-twenties. A retinol serum can help here (best to use in the evening). It should be added to the daily routine to reduce fine lines and wrinkles. Retinol stimulates cell growth and collagen production, which refines the complexion and makes the skin appear smoother. Since the anti-wrinkle ingredient retinol makes the skin more sensitive to the sun, it should really only be used at night. The Beneva Black Retinol Serum has a pipette for hygienic, easy dosing. It is supplied in a black bottle to optimally protect the active ingredients.
DON'T: TOO MUCH SUNRAY
Nothing harms your skin more than the sun. The harmful rays accelerate the aging process by slowing down collagen production and cell growth, forcing the skin to lose its elasticity. The best protection is a good sunscreen. The best choice is a moisturizer with a sun protection factor of 15 or higher that offers broad spectrum protection, i.e. it protects against both UVA and UVB rays.
DO: TAKE A NAP
If you keep the recommended seven to eight hours of sleep, your cells have enough time to recover. For the skin, this means that wrinkles, fine lines and pimples can be prevented. And don't try to catch up on a week's missed sleep on Sunday morning - the body, and especially the skin, needs constant sleep to look its best.
DO: PLENTY OF FRUIT AND VEGETABLES
Variety is essential when you fill your fridge with fruit and vegetables. From berries to carrots, every fruit and vegetable contains a variety of antioxidants that are good for you and your skin. Antioxidants help fight off free radicals, molecules that worsen the effects of inflammation, sun damage, and aging. Ideally, you should eat five to seven servings of fruits and vegetables a day. Researchers found that just two extra servings of fruits and vegetables a day can noticeably improve skin tone within six weeks.
Yellowed, wrinkled skin should be reason enough not to reach for the glowing stick. Smoking decreases blood flow and collagen production, causing your skin to lose its natural color and end up looking pale.
Stress and 12-hour workdays don't just affect your mood. Stress also has a negative impact on your skin. The excitement upset hormones, damaging healthy skin cells and making you more prone to pimples and wrinkles. Unfortunately, Zen cannot be bought in a bottle, so it is important that you relax regularly and do things that are good for you: whether this is cross fit or reading a book is of course up to you.
